Grab some snacks and hit the road with the finest of the genre’s comedies. This classic comedy features the antics of Chevy Chase and the Griswold family as they travel across the nation. The standard for buddy comedy was raised by this entirely unscripted film. Harry & Tonto is much more than a comedic tale of two brothers on the run because of Art Carney’s Oscar-winning performance.

After starring on Saturday Night Live, Farley parlayed his small-screen success into film roles including Wayne’s World and Coneheads. He later co-starred with Spade in Tommy Boy, which depicted their real-life rapport and led to a long run of films such as Airheads, Black Sheep, and Billy Madison.

Farley also did a turn as a bus driver in Harry & Tonto, and it’s here that he truly shines. His rage against the children on the bus is hysterical, and his passive-aggressive riffing with Spade is sublimely entertaining. This movie is also notable for introducing the public to a young Mike Myers. Farley died of a drug overdose in 1997. This documentary features famous people (including Dan Aykroyd, Adam Sandler, and Mike Myers) singing his praises. A must-see!

2. The Great Gatsby (1995)

The Great Gatsby is a difficult book to translate into film and it certainly proves to be even harder in 3-D. While some of the 3-D effects in The Great Gatsby work well, others feel like an unnecessary distraction. The party scenes in particular are out of place and make the film feel more like the idiot stepchild of Moulin Rouge than a serious adaptation.

Abigail Breslin gives her best performance as the lovable Olive Hoover in this road trip comedy that also showcases an impressive cast of heavyweights including Steve Carell, Toni Collette, and Paul Dano. This foul-mouthed movie is a hilarious reminder of the joys and perils of traveling with a family. The first entry in the National Lampoon franchise and still one of the funniest lookmovies ever made about a family’s chaotic misadventures on the open road.

3. The Last Temptation of Christ (1995)

Every period of American culture has its quintessential movie that encapsulates the zeitgeist. For the 1960s, it was Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider, a road trip movie that captured America’s growing disillusionment with the Vietnam War.

For the 1980s, it was Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, an adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis’ controversial novel. Like other New Wave films such as Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle and Bonnie and Clyde, this film showed protagonists that straddled the line between human and divine nature.

The film starred Willem Dafoe as Jesus, and Scorsese and screenwriter Paul Schrader wanted to give viewers a deeper understanding of the Gospels by portraying a more complex Christ. This film didn’t dance around blasphemy as other versions of the life of Christ had, but instead confronted it head on. That confrontation is what made this one so controversial.

4. Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (1999)

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is the film that launched Sacha Baron Cohen’s career. It stars him as a journalist from Kazakhstan who is sent to America to make a documentary about American culture. Along the way, he meets real people in real situations and exposes their prejudices and hypocrisies with hysterical results.

The movie contains a number of unscripted vignettes of Borat interacting with unsuspecting Americans. Among them are his attempts to buy a gun and a car, as well as his encounter with the fraternity brothers who show him the Baywatch “Pam and Tommy” sex tape. While some have questioned whether this movie should be classified as a comedy, it is impossible to deny its comedic value. In fact, it is arguably the best road comedy ever made.
